About MacroXray

Your protein. Your rules. Ranked.

What is MacroXray?

MacroXray is an independent protein product ranking engine. We pull nutrition data from retail sources, normalise everything to per-100 g and per-serving metrics, then rank every product across five transparent dimensions. The result is an objective, data-driven leaderboard that helps you find the protein products that actually match your priorities — whether that's maximum protein per calorie, best value, cleanest macros, or specific dietary needs.

No influencer deals. No sponsored placements. No “top 10” lists ghost-written by brands. Just numbers.

The 5 Ranking Dimensions

Every product receives a percentile score (0–100) in each dimension, calculated within its product category (bars vs bars, powders vs powders). The overall XRay Score is a weighted combination of all five.

Protein Efficiency

How much protein do you actually get per calorie? We measure grams of protein per 100 kcal — the purest signal of whether a product delivers on its promise.

Value

Price per 10 g of protein, converted across 25 currencies. We compare the real cost of hitting your protein target — not the sticker price of a tub.

Leanness

The protein-to-fat ratio tells you how clean a product is. High leanness means more muscle fuel, less filler fat.

Low Carb

Net carbs per serving. Whether you're keto, low-carb, or just carb-conscious, this dimension surfaces the products that won't spike your macros.

Fiber

Fiber per serving — an often-overlooked factor in satiety, gut health, and overall nutrition quality. Higher is better.

The XRay Score

The XRay Score is a weighted average of all five dimension percentiles. Protein Efficiency and Value carry the most weight because they reflect what most people care about — getting the most protein for the fewest calories and the lowest cost. Leanness, Low Carb, and Fiber fine-tune the picture.

A score of 85/100 means the product outperforms 85% of products in its category across the combined dimensions. It does not mean “85% healthy” or “grade B+” — it's a relative ranking, not an absolute judgment. For a full deep dive into the formulas and weights, see our Methodology.

Our Principles

No pay-to-rank

Brands cannot pay for placement or higher scores. Rankings are computed from nutrition data alone.

Open methodology

Every score is a percentile within its product category. The formula is the same for every product — no special weighting for sponsors.

Real prices, real currencies

We track actual retail prices and convert using daily FX rates. You see the real cost in your currency.

Dietary transparency

If we don't have confirmed data for a dietary flag, it shows as unknown — never as a guess. We'd rather show less than show wrong.

Where Does the Data Come From?

We source nutrition data and pricing from authorised retail APIs and public product pages. Every data point goes through our ETL pipeline where it's normalised, validated, and quality-scored. Products with low data confidence are flagged, and we never fabricate or extrapolate missing values.

If you spot an error — wrong price, incorrect dietary flag, outdated nutrition info — please report it to us. We take data accuracy seriously because the whole point of MacroXray is trust.

Affiliate Disclosure

Some “Where to Buy” links on product pages are affiliate links. If you purchase through them, MacroXray may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we keep the site running. Affiliate relationships never influence rankings — the scoring algorithm has no knowledge of which products have affiliate links and which don't.
